Cuba: Civil rights activist arrested for days

Yris Tamara Pérez Aguilera reports about diversion and maltreatment

Yris Tamara Péez Aguilera protested for the release of the arrested couple Sara Marta Fonseca and Julio Ignacio León Fonseca.

Placetas/ Frankfurt am Main (07th of October 2011) - "The civil rights activist Yris Tamara Pérez Aguilera, who "disappeared" between the 26th and 30th of September, has been arrested by the Cuban police illegally, displaced, maltreated and threatened with death", says the International Society for Human Rights (ISHR). In a note from the 3rd of October the civil rights activist reports about experienced maltreatments. She announced that the Cuban civil and human rights activists won´t be intimidated by repression.

When Yris Tamara Péez Aguilera protested for the release of the arrested couple Sara Marta Fonseca and Julio Ignacio León Fonseca on the 26th of September, she was arrested by the police. Her family in Placetas, Province Villa Clara, didn´t know for days where she was. Her supporters Donaida Pérez, Yamara Reyes Mesa, Mariblanca Avil Espósito and the son of the family Fonseca have also been arrested. The husband of Mrs. Pérez, Jorge Luis Garcia Pérez, called for help on the international society because he was worried about the life of his wife.

The police officer "Bolonia", who is well-known for his violence, draggled the civil rights activist more than 10 meters. While she lied on the ground, somebody hold her tight and another officer put his knee in her stomach, in order to force her to say "Viva Fidel" (Long live Fidel”). Instead of that she called "Abajo Fidel" (Down with Fidel) and somebody put a towel into her mouth. The police also insulted her as "black whore".

During the five days in prison, she barely got water and nutrition. All in all she was mistreated at four different police stations. On noon of the 29th of September the police pretended to release the arrested women, but arrested them a short time after that again. They were accused of  "resistance" and "threat to the public policy". The interrogation experts even threatened her with death. On one of the police stations, she was put in the same cell like a man who just murdered his wife. Until the 2nd of October, Yris Tamara Pérez Aguilera was arrested illegally.

The ISHR condemns the arbitrarily action of the Cuban regime deeply and calls on the Castro regime to accept the international human rights standards.
