Buddhist Monk: After unjust conviction no contact to the outside world
Dear Mr. President,
I write to you in order to raise your attention to the case of the imprisoned Buddhist monk Tenzin Deleg Ringpoche.
The high-ranking monk from East-Tibet committed himself to the revitalisation auf Tibetan culture. Besides his religious authority he is very well known for his commitment to the promotion of local schools, orphanages, monasteries and to the improvement of infrastructure, e.g. streets.
Tenzin Deleg Rinpoche was arrested on April 7th 2002. He is accused of being involved in a bomb attack on April 3rd 2002 on the central square of Sichuan's province capital, Chengdu. Furthermore he is accused of being responsible for numerous bomb attacks in the years of 2001 and 2002 in the region of Kardze (Ganzi) in Sichuan as well as for the distribution of flyers which call for separatism. During the eight months between his arrest and the trial begin Tenzin Deleg Ringpoche was probably severely tortured. The court officially assigned a defence lawyer for Tenzin Deleg. Inofficial sources speak of no defence lawyer being present on December 2nd 2002 for the verdict.
Tenzin Deleg Ringpoche was sentenced to death with a two-year probation adjournment. Consequently the Lama stood up denouncing the unfair trial and affirming his innocence, before he was brought out of the court room with his mouth gagged.
Authorities keep Tenzin Deleg Ringpoche's place of imprisonment secret. He is insulated from public and imprisoned in an unknown place. The charges against him have no substance and are based on severe procedural errors and perversion of justice. Furthermore a tape from January 18th 2003 recorded by Tenzin Deleg Ringpoche proves that he is wrongly accused and totally innocent, because he never had the intention to harm or injure other people. Local authorities prohibited family members and other locals to talk to journalists about the case. Threats of arrests were also made, if pictures of the monk were hung up publicly.
I am pleased that the state news agency Xinhua confirmed on January 26th 2005 that the death sentence for Tenzin Deleg Ringpoche was converted into a life-long prison sentence.´
I appeal to you, to use your influence and to immediately review the case of Tenzin Deleg Ringpoche in a fair trial according to international norms. Please also make sure that those responsible for procedural errors and perversion of justice are put on trial.
