The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention was established by the former Human Rights Commission in 1991. Today, it is subordinate to the Human Rights Council. The Working Group consists of five independent human rights experts, including chairperson and Rapporteur Seong-Phil Hong. The UN Working Group examines cases of arbitrary detention that violate human rights. Most recently, the Working Group has taken on the case of the Iranian human rights lawyer Abdolfattah Soltani, and have demanded his immediate release.
