Appeal Proposal: China: Abolish camps!

People’s Republic of China

Abolition of all camps

Dear Mr. President,

I am writing to draw your attention to the situation in the detention centres in the People’s Republic of China. According to various reports by the United Nations and human rights organisations, basic rights are systematically violated during arrests, criminal proceedings, and during the execution of sentences. These are infringements on Chinese law, which includes the prohibition of torture, as well as violations of international law, e.g. the treatment of prisoners.

Thus far, essential information on the prison and camp system in China has been held under lock and key. This includes even the exact number and addresses of the detention and “rehabilitation” facilities.

I appeal to you to make the penal system of the People’s Republic transparent by regularly publishing all data, and by allowing independent observers such as the United Nations or the International Red Cross to access the prisons. Furthermore, I appeal to you to dissolve all labour camps and “informal” detention facilities.

Yours sincerely,
