| | Cuban community commemorates imprisoned dissidents | |
A church service before Easter of the Trinity church community in the Cuban Santa Clara was the cause to commemorate the arbitrary arrest of 75 dissidents in March 2003. This was reported by the famous civil rights activist Guillermo Farinas Hernandez from the independent Cuban news agency Cubanacan Press. Concerning Hernandez' statements the ovations of the Baptist community that lasted for minutes were a reaction of the call of the former political prisoner and the head of the national civil movement Idalberto Gonzalez Gomez not to forget the victims of the so called "Black spring". Martin Lessenthin, Speaker of the Board of the ISHR, speaks about a "brave sign of solidarity with the victims and of the protest against the injustice regime which the ISHR is assenting." |

| | Cuba: Signatures are not enough | |
After a long time of refusal, Cuba signed two human rights agreements of the UN on the 28th of February 2008 - but these haven’t been ratified yet. The International Society for Human Rights (ISHR) demands that these agreements should be animated by releasing political prisoners, establishing freedom of trade unions and freedom of the press and permitting democratic parties. |

| | People’s Republic of China: Human rights situation in Olympic host country dramatic. The case of Chen Guangcheng. | | Six years ago, on 13 July 2001, the IOC decided to allocate the Olympic Games 2008 to Peking. Subsequently the IOC states its intention to monitor the human rights situation in China as well as demand the adherence of fundamental rights. However, according to the International Society for Human Rights (ISHR) no changes in the situation could be noted so far. An example of the continuous breach of human rights by Chinese authorities is the detained blind human rights activist Chen Guangcheng. On 16 June he was maltreated by fellow inmates at the gaolers’ disposition. The ISHR demands a fair and humane treatment of the detained person as well as an impartial, detached and comprehensive inquiry into the infringements. |

Russia: Day of the Army – no reason to celebrate |
|
The 23rd of February is officially celebrated in Russia as the “Day of the Army”. Acclaimed are the armed forces of the ministry of defence, the troops of the ministry of the interior, the intelligence service FSB, the army stationed at the borders and the railway troops of the Russian Federation. However, also this year the day will not generate a festive mood in the soldiers and inductees. According to information of the International Society for Human Rights (ISHR) there is barely a troop in Russia, which isn’t marked by desertion, slave labour and oppression by fellow soldiers. The “Dedowschtschina”, the dominance of the soldiers who served longer over the younger ones, still exists. Also on the “Day of the Army” the so-called “Cargo 200”, the zinc coffins with bodies of soldiers having been tortured beyond recognition, will roll through Russia. | |

After the ruling of Egypt’s highest court of December 16th, the regulation remains which states that Egyptians can only have the three official religions Muslim, Jew or Christian noted in their passport. | | ISHR Sues Cuba at the UN Human Rights Council | The International Society for Human Rights (ISHR) filed a complaint against the Republic of Cuba to the Human Rights Council. The ISHR reproves in its complaint - on the basis of the UN Resolution 1503 - the Cuban legislation, arbitrary detentions, torture and unfair summary proceeding against civil rights activists and journalists criticizing the regime. Cuba, which has been dictatorially reigned by the Castro-brothers for 48 years, is a member of the 2006 established UN-board, which replaced the Human Rights Commission. The Human Rights Commissioner of the Federal Government of Germany Günter Nooke wants the Federal Republic of Germany to use its EU-presidency to gain the embassies’ support for the oppositional Cuban democrats.
